

Geodude easily defeated Treecko despite the type disadvantage and Ash's best efforts, since Treecko did not know any Grass-type moves at the time. In the next episode, Geodude was the first Pokémon Roxanne used in her Gym battle with Ash. Geodude debuted in Gonna Rule The School!, when Roxanne used it to fight off Team Rocket. Some of the jobs are to clean the battlefield, film the matches, and act as a referee.

Also, a few students work in the Gym as interns to gain valuable experience as Trainers. Most of the matches are filmed, so the students can watch and study actual Gym battles to learn more about them. The Pokémon Trainers' School and the Rustboro Gym are connected in many ways. Pikachu, however, was able to defeat Geodude, as well as Roxanne's ace Pokémon, Nosepass, earning Ash his first Hoenn League Badge.

Even though Treecko was a Grass type, it was defeated by Roxanne's Geodude, due to it not knowing any Grass moves at the time. During the battle, Ash used his Treecko and Pikachu. When Ash met Roxanne as a teacher in the Pokémon Trainers' School in the previous episode, he asked her for a Gym battle, which she agreed to. The Rustboro Gym appeared in The Winner by a Nosepass. In Pokémon Masters EX, Rustboro Gym is seen in artwork related to Roxanne. Roxanne's artwork of Rustboro Gym Pokémon Masters EX Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Trainer Trainers with a PokéNav by their names will be registered in the Trainer's Eyes or Match Call function after the first battle, and may have a rematch with the player with higher-level Pokémon.
